On November 2, 2026, the ICC confirmed that Pakistan had been penalized after the ODI Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka, which took place at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on October 31.

Even after accounting for all relevant time allowances, the team was found to have finished its overs at a rate that was one short of the required rate. This resulted in a 5% match-fee deduction for each member of the playing group as well as the Player Support Personnel. Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Staff is the pertinent clause.

The on-field umpires were Ahsan Raza and Wayne Knights, followed by Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid as the third umpire and Rashid Riaz as the fourth. The matter was settled without a formal hearing when Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi entered a guilty plea and accepted the proposed sanction.

On the same day that Pakistan celebrated winning the ODI Tri-Series, the penalty was imposed. Pakistan reached 331 for 7 in 48.3 overs while chasing Sri Lanka’s 326 set, winning by three wickets with nine balls left. To end the chase, Afridi himself hit the game-winning six. In his 12th ODI century, Fakhar Zaman anchored the innings with 127 off 99 balls, hitting 6 sixes and 11 fours.

Pakistan crossed the finish line thanks to a sixth-wicket partnership of 94 runs between Arafat Minhas, who scored 61 off 31 balls, and Hasan Nawaz, who finished undefeated at 37. The administrative decision did not include the ICC Men’s World Cup context related to this tournament’s wider scheduling, and the evidence provided did not support this claim.

What does this penalty mean for Pakistan’s standing in the competition?

Pakistan’s slow over-rate offense in the 2026 ODI Tri-Series did not begin with the Lahore final. Pakistan was fined 10% of their match fee for falling two overs short of the required rate in the tournament’s opening match against Sri Lanka on October 18 at Rawalpindi.

Pakistan’s second slow over-rate infraction in the same competition was thus validated by the final ruling. The single-over deficit in Lahore received a 5% deduction due to Article 2.22’s per-over penalty, while the two-over deficit at Rawalpindi received a 10% deduction.

There is no need for a formal hearing before a judicial commissioner because Afridi has accepted the charge and consented to the punishment without contest. At the match-referee level, the case is deemed resolved and the penalty takes immediate administrative effect.

This is exactly how a captain can resolve a slow over-rate charge under the ICC’s procedure under the applicable Code of Conduct provision. The matter is now closed, and no additional disciplinary actions are planned in relation to the October 31 final.
