After scans revealed a cervical facet joint injury in his neck, Australia’s Steve Smith will not be eligible for selection until the home Test series against New Zealand in December. After suffering from neck pain on the fourth day of the second Test in Gqeberha, the 37-year-old was disqualified from the current third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Although Smith had been dealing with the problem since the second Test in Gqeberha, he still experienced discomfort in the days that followed. Smith’s cervical facet joint injury was confirmed by MRI imaging. The cervical facet joint aids in stabilizing neck motion. He was judged unfit to take part in the third Test because of this injury and his restricted range of motion.

Smith will continue to receive treatment and rehabilitation, and a full return to availability is expected for the forthcoming home Test series against New Zealand, according to a statement from Cricket Australia (CA). The 37-year-old would not be eligible for selection until the forthcoming home series, according to the statement. In a statement, Cricket Australia said, “Steve will continue to receive treatment and rehabilitation, with a full return to availability anticipated for the upcoming home test series against New Zealand.”

When is Steve Smith going to play again?

In the crucial Cape Town Test, all-rounder Cameron Green filled Smith’s customary number four spot after recovering from injury. South Africa scored 329 in the opening innings of the pivotal third Test. Green scored 65 off 110 balls while playing as a specialist hitter.

Australia will play four Test matches against New Zealand, starting in Perth on December 9. Sydney, Melbourne, and Adelaide will host the second, third, and fourth Test matches, respectively. The Australians will play three ODIs and five T20Is at home against their Ashes rivals, England, prior to this match. Australia’s batting lineup will benefit greatly from Smith’s expected return for this series as they get ready for their home campaign against the Kiwis.
